Chadwick the Crab Children's Book

Printed in Baltimore.
“Move aside, Babar, Paddington, Pooh-Bear…make room for Chadwick.” —Attraction Chadwick is a happy Chesapeake Bay blue crab who enjoys a wide circle of friends—quiet Orville Oyster, Matilda (a fussy, near-sighted egret), Toulouse the French Canada Goose, Bernie the Sea Gull, and especially Esmerelda, the prettiest girl crab in the entire bay. But Chadwick yearns for adventure and decides that more than anything else he wants to be a star at the aquarium in Baltimore. This is the story of how one little crab realizes a very big dream. Early reader–ages 5-8.
Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3 A blue crab is depressed because he will soon have to swim to the deeper waters of the Chesapeake Bay to sleep through the winter. His dream of fame, fortune, and adventure is realized when, through a series of mishaps, he becomes a star in the crab exhibit at the Baltimore Aquarium. Chadwick and his friends Orville the oyster, Matilda the ``fussy old egret,'' Toulouse the goose, Bernie the sea gull, and Esmerelda, Chadwick's crab girlfriend are too cute, too shallow, and too unbelievable to attract readers. Writing is amateurish and silly; the characters are assigned too many human qualities for no apparent reason they are extraneous fluff and add nothing to the story. The book is full of impossibilities, even for a fantasy for instance, how can a crab crawl out of a metal cleaning bucket? Cohen's illustrations, bold and vital, give the story the only life it has more than it deserves. Hayden E. Atwood, Cape Elizabeth Middle School , Maine
